If The Doctors Are Right

Then I’ve got to make some order

stop wasting what little is left

no more Times crossword especially

not the Sunday no more reruns

out of boredom no more boredom

no need to read a book to the end

read the last page first then return it

who’s counting now who ever was

At this very minute

a lunar eclipse just like the paper said

that seems worth a look

(when will this constant weighing stop)

like a tall guy’s shadow

taking out a piece of the screen

down in from you moron

last of the century in this hemisphere

good then I won’t miss any

hate to think of it all going on

without me

now hear this

no more fun if I check out

no celestial phenomena of any sort

Old man in the moon

looks alarmed and who can blame him

half his cheek and all his chin

in darkness a five o’clock shadow

worse than tricky dick

neighbors stand on their decks

all of us with binoculars and bathrobes

night is warm moon is shrinking

waning light upside down in my eye

and me standing here among them

even if the doctors are right
