Just As The Game Starts

was there all along

I see that now

behind everything fear

bribe the fear with juice and cookies

bury the fear in some guy’s hairy ass

clock the fear in tequila and darkness

drown the fear in laughtracks and bylines

sleeping it off on a bright weekend morning

working it off on a steep icy trail

kissing it off at airports and terminals

so I grew a black and red ball

dense as a meteorite

insistent as lava

it took up residence

over my lovesick heart

now makes itself known

at the strangest times and places

just as the snow falls

the game starts or

we all sit down with candles lit

they’ll grow up without you

this could be the last time

your first mistake was

you were too happy
